Up early this morning…7:30 to say the least. Although I am a little under the record, I can feel that today is going to be a great day. To speak on my post from last night, I did have that burden lifeted off of me this morning. I feel so much better, like seriously. I was praying that everything was going to be okay. Right now I am meeting with my News Broadcasting class going over our pitch for our presentation in class today. Our story really focused how a blight on your record in college does not just erase, but it can follow you out of college. I feel that this story is educational for students because it lets them know a perpspective from an employer and the graduate admissions office. The story turned out great and I really could see it on WUGA tv. Well, time to start looking at what’s going on in the world today. Have a great day!

FVSU Step show

When we arrived, we had no idea about our competition. Our step team traveled to Fort Valley State University for their annual Stompfest. We were so excited becuase there was so much money up for grabs. Butterflies tried to get the best of us, but our confidence kept us hyped up. In our dressing room, we ran through the show many times, and we even ran through our partner flip on the patio right outside the door of our room. When we got on the stage, we were performing like no other. This was definitely one of our best shows. At the announcement of the winner, we were super nervous!! and the winner is….Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority inc!!!!! We won the first place sorority for $2000 and $2000 for overall best group. We won it all!! As step master, I am very proud of the effort our team put forth.

Exploration of Topic

I plan to base my paper off of the following question: How does a mental retardation, such as Autism develop over a life span, regarding to social encounters?

This debate can be approached with key elements being personal development (self-esteem), outside perspectives, and overall challenges that they face on a daily bases. This topic will also cover the amount of effort it takes for these individuals to develop and also ask the question, are social skills learned, or naturally “known?”

Tension may arrive within this topic while covering the outside views of others who are not suffering from this deficit. They may have offensive views when it comes to individuals with this retardation. They may not be able to accept them in the work force, education, public places, and politics.

Sources for this topic can be found in the UGA Libraries, Athens Regional Library, the internet, personal interviews with former high school special education teachers, and media forms that deal with Autism (DVD’s, documentaries, video diaries, ect.)

Other questions that I will address include:
How is Autism diagnosed?
Are there certain characteristics that are related to Autism, that non diagnosed people my have?
Are there any treatments or cures ?
Are people with Autism attracted to a certain “type” of individuals?
Do people with Autism tend to have a more secure or avoidance relationship with their parents/providers?
How likely or what are the statistics of individuals with Autism living on their own and living “normal” lives?

Research Paper Ideas

The main idea here is intellectual disabilities. There are so many routes that I can take. I am strongly thinking about focusing on:

1.Down Syndrome and how it Effects individuals
-what type of impact it has on peoples lives
-How it effects children and adults
-the medical history of down syndrome
-Can it be prevented?
-The different stages of Down Syndrome (if any)
-Is it something that has to to with genes?

Also I was thinking about exploring Savant Syndrome
-This is not a topic that I’ve had a lot of exposure to, but I do feel like it would be interesting to discover the mental aspects that go with this syndrome.
-How often are ppl diagnosed swith Savant Syndrome?
-I would be interested in interviewing someone who knows or works closely with someone who has Savant. I want to hear real life situations and interpret quotes in my paper from this particular research.

1. People with intellectual disabilities have more opportunity to succeed than ever before.

2. Individuals with intellectual disabilities are capable of leading an independent lifestyle, only to a certain extent.

3. while some people with intellectual disabilities can be spotted on a superficial level, some people have intellectual disabilities that go beyond skin deep.

6 transitional statements

1. Along with the special Olympics, public systems allow social opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities.

2. Despite the set backs presented in the aformentioned history of people with intellectual, society offers opportunity to succeed.

3. Although there are people with intellectual disabilities who live independently, there are still many who require daily assistance.

4. There are people with intellectual disabilities that require special help, but there are people who live on their own.

5. Even though some people seem to look and act normal, that’s always not the case.

6. While the appearance of normalcy can be a deception, people who appear abnormalshow their true nature.

Topic: Intellectual Disabilities
-Intellectual disability is characterized both by a significantly below-average score on a test of mental ability or intelligence and by limitations in the ability to function in areas of daily life, such as communication, self-care, and getting along in social situations and school activities. Intellectual disability is sometimes referred to as a cognitive disability or mental retardation.
-This topic will be challenging in some areas concerning whether or not a characteristic is classified as an intellectual disability or not.
-Levels of disability can range from mild to profound
-Usually is when a person doesn’t adapt or learn as quickly, but still able
• -A significantly reduced ability to understand new or complex information, to learn new skills (impaired intelligence), with
• A reduced ability to cope independently (impaired social functioning);
• which started before adulthood, with a lasting effect on development.
-The term intellectual disability generally replaces “mental retardation”
-Could this be controversial?
-Is this something that affects people differently depending on each personal situation?
Which one is preferred?
Concepts rose about Intellectual Disability
-The AAID came up with a concept stating: that evaluation and classification should lead not to placing individuals into pre-existing programs but rather to tailoring services and supports to suit the individual within that individual’s social situation and environment.
-This is something that I feel like I should definitely go into depth with
-Being careful with word choice while writing on this specific topic is imperative,
-There are so many words that are used loosely, but the real meanings must be applied. I feel like that it is out of respect.

Is this really a defining moment for high school seniors, by determining their graduation opportunity through one test?
Should students have study sessions throughout high school since it is a cumulative test?
“Am I dumb because I can’t pass a state mandated test?”
Teachers caring about the students’ achievement
-Is the student alone in the process
Is there really beneficial help
“What if I made all A’s through high school and still can’t pass the graduation test?”
-Was my high school career a joke?
“I just got a full ride scholarship to play football but I’ve always avoided science, math, social studies, and language arts classes….what do I do?”
Should there just be one test or any test to say whether or not a student walks across the stage?
After a certain amount of tries, and the student still can’t pass, there may be a problem with the student that should have been noticed before the final test of high school career
The graduation tests cause a ton of controversy
-People want it gone forever
-all teachers, principals, and board members do not agree
-If a student can pass, are they going on to the next level?
Is the graduation test at a level where all levels of high school students have the opportunity to perform well?
-What about the children with intellectual disabilities?
-What about students who stayed at the lower levels all through high school?
-Is this a way to weed out people from graduating?
-What does it really take to pass this test?

Is it really a matter of “No child left behind?”
Or are students left behing everytime?
